Does anyone know if a car company has tried dimpling the surface of a car to reduce friction due to air?

Dimpling a golf ball is known to reduce air friction by causing turbulence as the ball travels through the air. As a result the ball will go farther for a given amount of energy transferred from the club head. Has a car company tried this same technique on the surface of a car to reduce air resistance when traveling at highway speeds? Air resistance accounts for ~ 40% of friction losses in a passenger sedan at 60mph. Could dimpling reduce this and improve economy?

I read that too in the article below. I would imagine that it would decrease air-drag, but probably not as much as improvements due to form-drag… or drag caused by the whole shape or form of the car.

A way to think about it is. When the golf ball starts moving from rest. There is a layer of air around it that is in contact with the ball, called the boundary layer. The layer starts of moving with the ball, but eventually gets stripped away. The is less friction when air is rubbing against air, but after that boundry layer is pushed away, it’s air against ball… then turbulent flow begins… so energy is lost to creating turbulent flow around the ball. The dimples maintain this boundry layer longer, and decreases the turbulent flow around the ball…

“Firstly, the dimples delay separation of the boundary layer from the ball. Early separation, as seen on a smooth sphere, causes significant wake turbulence, the principal cause of drag. The separation delay caused by the dimples therefore reduces this wake turbulence, and hence the drag.”

So it maye reduce drag during the acceleration of the car, but not sure if it’s maintained during cruising.

Boeing has tested surfaces with Riblets to reduce skin-friction.

They say you could save a lot of gas by driving at 65 mph instead of 75mph
