Trouble shots from the periphery of the golf course usually require more golf swing tips than the average high handicapper will have in their bag of tricks. Sometimes we hit shots into the trees, or high grass or fairway bunkers or worse places that have really unforgiving slopes connected to them – aaarrrgghh! This type of shot is nearly never practiced and usually causes a blown hole due to inexperience.
One stroke-saving shot a newer golfer should be taught is the knock-down or punch shot. It is THE go-to shot when you are in risky territory and just want to get back into play with some level of ball furtherance. This shot allows you to hit the ball in a low trajectory to a controlled distance in tough conditions via a kind of chopping motion combined with a short swing follow through.
This shot type is really versatile and can be creatively used in many different situations. On a windy day the goal is to stay low and focus on controlling the flight of the ball and trajectory. Use it to avoid tree branches, other golfers, bad lies, racoons – whatever hazards you may encounter in a real game that don’t show up at the driving range.
The punch is a secret weapon that should not be taken lightly as it could lead to more trouble, therefore please practice this shot to get your distances right.
To get started with this shot, I just play the ball more in the back of my stance then bring the club 1/2 to 3/4 back, (play it about 3 inches further back than normal). Take more club than you think you might need in these shots, like 1 or 2 more. Keeping the hands ahead of ball is crucial. Some might prefer to think of this as a powerfuld pitch shot with the difference being the fact that you could use it off the tee!
So take more club, choke down and play the ball back in your stance. Stay still in the lower body and swing through low and stop. Don’t move the ball back as far when using a longer club – otherwise the result might look like a long putt. The most important thing: Don’t get revved up and hit it too hard as the ball will go shockingly far.
Lastly: narrow your stance a bit, shift your weight to about 60-40 to your lead leg, make a 3/4 backswing never getting off front side, drive through the shot with quiet lower body, holding off the finish. A punch is an overall much shorter swing and your arms stay connected to the torso through much of the swing. Hitting down on the ball is a natural consequence of this shot type.
