Set Uniflex
Nike Golf Slingshot Irons, Set of 8 (3H, 4-PW, Steel RH, Uniflex)
need help with club shaft types.?
I am looking at a set of clubs and they claim to have a uniflex shaft and I was wondering just what exactly is a uniflex shaft. I also have a slower swing speed than usual but with constant playing i hope to have a faster swing speed. should i start with graphite or steel shafts?
Uniflex is intended to be a “one size fits all” solution to the shaft flex issue. Uni- is a prefix that mean “many” or “all” (for example a unisex bathroom is open for both men and women to use). As is typical for this kind of solution, a lot of people find that it tends to be a shaft that is decent for a lot of people, but not great for anybody.
If you have the time and the money, what would be the best would be to get a fitting for your clubs. You will want to have your clubs lie fitted anyway (i.e. if you have a more upright swing, you will want to have the clubheads bent to have a more upright lie angle, or vice versa for a flatter swing), you might as well get a set of shafts that are well matched for your swing speed, too. And, if someday you achieve a higher swing speed, just get refitted and get new shafts installed. You can keep the old shafts or sell them on eBay.
The graphite versus steel is a personal choice, really. Graphite shafts have significantly improved over the last 10 years or so, and they are very close if not equal in quality to steel shafts now. Some of the reasons for going with graphite would be: 1) if you have arthritis in your joints or are prone to tennis elbow (golfer’s elbow!) the graphite tends to dampen the vibrations from hitting the ground significantly more than steel. 2) If you do indeed have a really low swing speed, graphite can be made lighter than steel — a lighter club can be swung faster than a heavier club. Another thing to consider is that graphite tends to have a little wider dispersion in the resulting ball flights than steel. That is, by the nature of the material, it tends to spread out where the balls land a little more than steel. So, if you demand pin-point accuracy steel is almost the only way to go. Similar to above, I would try to get a fitting where you can try both steel and graphite shafted clubs and see what you prefer.
I would suggest taking at least one lesson from an instructor to help diagnose what you call a “slower swing speed” and make sure that there isn’t a major technique flaw that is slowing your swing down. You may be able to remedy that slower swing speed just by learning more correct technique.
